Letters from the Chair, Chapter VI: What Do You See When You Look Out the Window?

What Do You See When You Look Out the Window?

Dear Visionaries, Changemakers, and Future Leaders,

What do you see when you look out the window?

When Sarah McArthur asked me this question, I could have given a simple answer. I could have described the streets, the buildings, the people passing by, their hurried steps, the glow of their phones lighting up their faces. I could have listed the physical details, the surface-level observations.

But that’s not what I saw.

I saw something deeper; something unspoken, yet profoundly present.

I saw non-communicated emotions.

People in conversation, but not in understanding. People together, but not truly connected. People moving forward, but stuck in the same place. People escaping, but never really leaving.

Yet, in the same breath, I saw something else. I saw oneness. I saw proof that connection still exists, even in a world that often feels disconnected.

And then, I realized: this is leadership.

Leadership: The Art of Seeing Beyond the Surface

Leadership is not about titles. It is not about hierarchy, status, or having the newest car or the best suit in the room. It is about people. It is about presence. It is about connection.

My father understood this.

He built a company that became tremendously successful, not just because of strategy or innovation, but because of culture. Because of people. He implemented Mitbestimmung—a system where every employee had the same voting rights as the C-suite, as the directors, as the management. The workers were not just employees; they were owners of the vision.

They were part of the journey.

And when a crisis came—when strikes broke out in the 70s and other companies saw their workers walk out—his employees stayed. Not out of obligation. Not because they were forced. But because they were one. Because they believed in the man who led them. Because they trusted him. Because they respected him. And respect had turned into something deeper—something most leaders never achieve.

It had turned into love.
