Each charitable partner tells a different story, full of courage, empathy, and compassion towards others. Today, we want to share with you the story of Panzi Hospital.
In 1999, Dr. Denis Mukwege founded Panzi Hospital with the vision of creating a center of excellence for maternal healthcare in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where high rates of maternal and infant mortality were alarming. However, the hospital’s story took an unexpected turn when the first patients who arrived were not pregnant women, but survivors of sexual violence perpetrated by armed militias during the Second Congo War.
What Panzi’s staff found were severe gynecological injuries and an urgent need for help for these women. Dr. Mukwege and his team transformed the hospital into a safe space that supports the physical and emotional healing process of survivors. They have rebuilt lives and empowered those who have gone through unimaginable experiences.
Today, Panzi Hospital has treated over 80,000 women, including 69,000 survivors of sexual violence. In addition to providing care for conflict victims, Panzi Hospital offers a wide range of medical and obstetric services, with a maternal mortality rate of 0.19%, an impressive achievement in a country with significant challenges in maternal health.
Sociis is proud to support Panzi Hospital in this challenging work. We firmly believe in the importance of supporting those living in conflict zones and in contributing to building a fairer and more equitable world.
